Privacy Policy
Short version
abookify is designed to keep your books on your hardware. We don't collect, transmit, or store the contents of your library. The mobile and desktop apps connect to a server you control. We don't run analytics, advertising, or behavioural tracking.
What we do not collect
- The audiobooks, ebooks, transcripts, bookmarks, notes, or any other content in your library.
- Your reading or listening history.
- Information about which works you own.
- Your usage patterns (which features you use, how often, when).
- Device identifiers, advertising IDs, or other tracking identifiers.
- Location data.
What is collected, and by whom
The abookify server you run
The server software runs on your own hardware. It stores your library locally in a SQLite database on that machine. No part of this data is sent to PJ3 Labs Inc. or any third party as part of normal operation.
Mobile and desktop apps
The apps store the URL you enter for your own server (and any pairing token used to authenticate with it) in secure on-device storage. They do not transmit this information to PJ3 Labs Inc.
The apps may send anonymous crash reports to Apple or Google if you have opted in to platform-level diagnostics in your device settings. We do not maintain our own crash reporting service.
Optional services you may enable
Some features connect to third-party services only if you choose to enable them. When enabled, those services receive data per their own privacy policies, not ours:
- NullBore Relay — an optional tunnel that lets you reach your server from outside your home network. When enabled, encrypted traffic between your devices and your server transits NullBore's infrastructure. See nullbore.com.
- LLM providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Ollama, etc.) — if you enter an API key for an LLM provider to use the Q&A feature, your queries and book excerpts are sent to that provider. Their privacy policy applies. We never see this traffic.
- Cover art lookup — if enabled, the server queries OpenLibrary or similar public catalogues. Only book titles and author names are sent.
Children's privacy
abookify is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Your rights
Because we don't collect personal information, there is nothing for us to provide, correct, or delete. The data in your abookify library is under your direct control on hardware you own.
If you have used a third-party service alongside abookify (such as an LLM provider) and wish to exercise rights over data held by that service, contact them directly.
Compliance
This policy is intended to comply with Canada's PIPEDA, the European Union's GDPR, and California's CCPA insofar as those laws apply to a product that does not collect personal information from its users.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change what we collect, we will update this page and date it. Material changes that affect existing users will be communicated through the app and the abookify website.
